Ecuadorian Dies From Attack That May Be Treated As Hate Crime

I thought I should share this article with the class since Professor Cotera has made a point of making us aware of the hate crimes committed against Latina/os that have occured recently. It seems that hate crimes against Latina/os have been escalating dramatically as well as media coverage on this issue. This article was especially alarming to me because this occured in my own city, which I always thought of as a diverse and accepting place. This goes to show that these crimes can happen anywhere and are truly becoming a major problem in this country.

Wow, this is an awful story. I hope they finally find whoever is responsible for Jose Sucuzhanay's death and prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law.
It's scary to think how many people out there are still so ignorant and don't see a problem. Also, I can't help but wonder how many more hate crimes occur without anyone knowing about it. Authorities cover things like that up to keep a good reputation.
It's sad that our media and television only chooses to highlight and portray certain aspects of these types of events in regards to minorities. Hate crimes occur so much, especially in American history with lynchings and police brutality, but it seems as though the only news coverage on minorities includes their criminal activities. Obviously media in our society is immensely skewed.
